5 The Escape
After the Arrow Cross and the Germans had taken everyone away, we climbed out from our hiding place to escape. We made sure that everything was quiet and then we crept downstairs to get out from the house. Suddenly, the caretaker re-appeared carrying more loot.
He was horrified and very angry when he saw us. He ordered us to stay, and closing the gates on his way, he ran out to find a Nazi to report to. Luckily he had left his concierge room open so we went in and looked until we found a few big keys to try. One of them fitted the gate. We opened it, sneaked out and got away as fast as we could. By then Father was in a terrible condition; he had to find a doctor and we had to find a safe place. We separated at the first corner and we never saw Father again.
